Introduction of Digital Firearm Applications for Sporting Weapons

DSSN has, as previously informed, participated in a pilot project for digital firearm applications together with other shooting federations. The application deadline for sporting weapons in this pilot project was May 16th, and participants from DSSN found the process to be very user-friendly and fast. The longest processing time from submission to approval was only three business days. After the pilot project, we provided some feedback on potential improvements, such as correcting errors in the dropdown menu for divisions, adding a checkbox for reserve weapons, and including a comment field for additional information.

On June 4th, 2024, the federation received an email from the Police Directorate and the police’s IT unit containing the following information:

From June 4th, 2024, the police will open for digital applications for sporting weapons. This solution is an extension of the existing digital application process for hunting weapons.

The new solution allows applicants to upload attachments documenting membership, activity, and firearm proficiency. Templates for activity logs that applicants can use have also been developed.

It is important to be aware that this solution is an MVP (Minimum Viable Product), and therefore does not cover all needs yet. For example, functionality for applications for firearm parts, including high-capacity magazines, and applications for firearms for shooters under 18 years old is still missing. The police will continue to work on developing these features.

The digital solution for hunting weapons has been in operation since May 22nd, 2023. There have been several instances where applicants have used the same permit more than once, leading to the implementation of the following risk-reducing measures:

The police can send decisions digitally, but the permits themselves must be sent by regular mail. These will be on paper with a physical stamp and signature.
The same procedure also applies to hunting weapons.

A new national firearm register will include a solution for digital ownership transfer and verification of permits. Once this is in place, the risk-reducing measures will be lifted.

Permits issued before June 4th, 2024, will remain valid.
